The benefit of this is having an arsenal of melody building blocks you can use whenever for each different feeling.
So if you wanna make hard, sad, pop progressions like NF does you don't have to start from zero.
Now, you might say that this will lead to all your songs sounding like copies, but just one look at the recent Ed Sheeran lawsuits will show you that there are no unique chord progressions. you will get to these melodies either by ear or you can save yourself some time and use that energy towards innovating from this point onward.

Do I need to know Music Theory?

However, knowing music theory will definitely help you applying this knowledge later on. So while you don’t need it, music theory knowledge will make you better at coming up with melodies, especially when it comes to innovating and breaking the rules.
After all, you need to know what is already being done to make something new.
